How Covid-19 has affected the L&D world
I’m sure we’re all pretty sick of hearing the ‘C’ word, but Coronavirus is here for a while and has already shaped the world around us. It’s safe to say that working in Learning & Development has never been more interesting.
The need for quick responses and easily accessible information
The first coronavirus advice in the UK went out at the beginning of March and within 48 hours many businesses needed to release guidelines and company policies to their entire workforce.
One of our clients needed every employee to complete a coronavirus eLearning module, informing them of strict new guidelines and ensuring they could carry on with business in a new and adapted manner as quickly as possible. They did this by quickly setting up the module in their LMS to launch as soon as an employee logged in. This ensured they completed their training before having the ability to proceed further into the platform. This also allowed L&D team to track and report on course completions across all of the well-known pizza company’s stores!

More businesses are deciding to work remotely
As time has gone on, many businesses have provided the means for employees to work from home. Most have adapted well, but with this employers also have a responsibility to provide the same duty of care to their workforce. During this time businesses have had to provide mental and physical advice and support to their employees. Not only this, managers are now needing to manage their teams virtually, a totally new concept to working life.
Many companies have quickly supported their workforce by creating a, “working from home”, short and accessible programme for everyone to complete, allowing them to kickstart their remote working whilst feeling confident and reassured that they are being looked after by their employers.
What about the employees who were due to take on face to face training?
Well, our new virtual reality allows us to connect with people through webcam and screenshare and has really made a difference to this isolated time. It may not be quite the same as a face to face meeting over a coffee, but for now it’s the best we have got. In many ways has introduced a more relaxed approach to meetings, as people tend to feel more comfortable in their own surroundings.
Many trainers have quickly adapted to the Webinar format, adjusting their approach to suit the remote delivery.
Another big plus to using videocam software is that we are able to record a session or meeting and watch it back. This means that once virtual training is complete, it is on hand for all attendees to review if they need to.
Tackling learning and development budget cuts
Some businesses have taken the opportunity to completely review their approach by migrating their training to a blended approach to reduce costs in what was previously heavily face to face-oriented. This has been to both accommodate more remote training and to provide a more diverse form of learning through videos, short assessments, podcasts, and eLearning modules that save money and time.
This has helped businesses tackle L&D budget cuts and allowed learners to complete the training more effectively with better retention. Brandon Hall research shows that online training provides a saving of between 40 – 60% over face to face training. Rather than having to sit through a 5-8-hour long training day, learners are able to dip in and out of the training as they like, meaning they are not overloaded with information they won’t necessarily retain. Research from Forbes shows that online learners retain between 25-60% higher than face-to-face learners. Plus, according to an IBM study, for every dollar spent on training there is a return of $30 in productivity.

Furloughed employees can still complete online training – if they want to!
The government offered the furlough scheme to keep businesses afloat during this time. If your employees have been furloughed, they cannot complete work, however, they can choose to complete online training. So, L&D departments have had to think outside the box to provide an engaging and learner led programme.
But how do you motivate people to learn in their spare time?
When it comes to logging into an LMS, people will usually greet it with an eye roll. But what if that eLearning was tailored around their needs? Short courses recommended to an individual based on the skills they need, allow learners to retain information in weaker areas. Engaging gamified features, allow your workplace to compete against each-other and stay connected.

Another brilliant tool to put learners in the driver’s seat of their development is the glo Skills advisor tool. Learners complete a built-in self-assessment. Once this is complete, the LMS recommends short eLearning courses that will plug their skills gaps. This allows learners to see where they may need up-skilling and provides them with the choice of whether to complete the recommended courses.
