  • Generation Z (Gen Z) are the generation born between 1994 and 2010
  • By 2020 they’ll make up 20% of the total workforce
  • They are jaded from the recession and are burdened with student loans
  • However, they are even more entrepreneurial, loyal, flexible and realistic in their approach to work compared to Millennials (born between 1981 and 1997)
  • They choose opportunities for growth and work life balance over salary when choosing what company to work for
  • Like Millennials, they will seek mentors at the beginning of their careers

  • 1 in 3 want to become managers in the next 5 years
  • They expect to work at an average of 4 organisations throughout their career
  • More than 3 in 4 believe they will need to work harder compared to past generations, to have a satisfying and fulfilling professional life
  • 1 in 3 would like to retire by the age of 60
  • Less than 1 in 5 actually think this is possible
  • 23% are currently volunteering

How to help them learn

  • Growth opportunity is the No 1 motivation in their search for jobs, meaning their priority is their learning and development – so you have a keen and captive audience
  • Make it a journey – structure is so important. Bite size, gamified, fun and and instantly rewarding, feeding their hunger to succeed
  • Make it user friendly – help them find what they want – for e.g. a Learning Management System that seems archaic and clunky to them is going to immediately disengage. They have grown up with technology at their fingertips and are used to finding information quickly.
  • Make it mobile – their lives are technology based, fast paced, mobile and instant. Empower and grow them with access to learning and development that matches this and they will become loyal and active learners
  • Make it blended with soft skills available too, they recognise how varying skills affect their whole life and the importance of a work life balance is high priority for them
